The Curious Case of Benjamin Button sets a North American premiere Off-Broadway at the Public Theater

London’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will cross the pond for a North American premiere Off-Broadway at the Public Theater. The musical—which features a book by Jethro Compton, music by Darren Clark, and lyrics by Clark and Compton—will play the company’s Newman Theater October 8-November 15, officially opening October 21.

Based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald book, the work follows a man who is born as an old man and ages in reverse, tracking his life from the end of World War I through the 20th century.

The musical adaptation opened at London’s Southwark Playhouse in 2019,before transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End in 2024. The work won Best New Musical at the 2025 Olivier Awards.

Compton will again direct the North American premiere, with Chi-San Howard back to choreograph as well. Casting and further creative team members are to be announced. None of the west end cast are set to reprise their role in this production.
