Jorge Rivera-Herrans, creator and producer of EPIC, a loose musical adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey recently announced the release of the fourth EP “The Circe Saga” in a series of concept albums.
The musical, divided in 9 parts, tells the tale of Odysseus’ 20-year journey home through several challenges – being challenged by gods and monsters.
This time, the crew comes face to face with the sorceress Circe. On “Puppeteers”, Eurylochus informs Odysseus of a new threat: a witch who turned half their remaining men into pigs. Unlike “Ruthlessness” and “Remember Them”, the melody on this song is infused with hip-hop rhythm and filled with a soft violin that sets the tone and creates tension throughout the whole track.
With this new EP, we get to meet new voices as well. That includes Talya Sindel as the goddess/with Circe and TROY as the all powerful and playful god, Hermes. On “Wouldn’t You Like”, Hermes gives Odysseus a root that temporarily allows him to conjure monsters in order to take on Circe. It’s an upbeat poppy song that allows TROY to fully play with Hermes’ character and voice. At times, it reminds us of RnB sounds and others, of big modern Broadway musical with a omnipresent ensemble that, again, enhanced the tension.
“Done For”, featuring a clever duet between Circe and Odysseus, is set to become another fan’s favorite, following “My Goodbye” and “Warrior Of The Mind”. There are play on words, witty comments and the mix of both of the singers’ voices is a delight for the ear. It continues on “There Are Other Ways” that also serves as an introduction to the next chapter: The Underworld Saga in which Odysseus is set to meet the prophet Tiresias.
The first EP, “The Troy Saga” was released in 2022 and was made available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify where it gathered over 2.5 million streams in three days. In less than 12 hours, EPIC: The Troy Saga was already on top of the charts on iTunes, being the #1 soundtrack.
The second EP, “The Cyclop Saga” was released on January 27th. This time, the storyline included Odysseus battling with Polyphemus the cyclop.
The third EP, “The Ocean Saga” was released on December 25th 2023. In this EP, they encountered the wind god and tried to get her help to get trough a storm. On the last song, they came face to face with Poseidon, the sea god.
According to its creator, the full musical will feature multiple musical genres including classic pop, rock, orchestral and electronic. Throughout the show, each character will be paired with a specific instrument that represents them musically: Odysseus being the guitar, Athena the piano and Poseidon the trumpet.
The Underworld Saga is set to be the fifth chapter in Epic: The Musical. Thought we don’t know the release date yet, make sure to keep your eyes peeled on EPIC’s social media.
