“Jagged Little Pill”, “Moulin Rouge” and “Slave Play” lead the 2020 Tony Awards nominations

Although it’s definitely been a strange and rough year for the industry due to the coronavirus outbreal, the show must go on! Back in August, The Broadway League and American Theatre Wing announced that the annual Tony Awards ceremony would still take place virtually this fall. An exciting way to keep the industry alive during this hard time, reward those who worked on-stage and backstage and celebrate a season was sadly cut short.

In order to be eligible for a Tony, productions will have to have opened before or on February 19, 2020. Some shows were still in previews or were set to open between february 19 and March 12 -when the shutdown was announced- but nominators and voters may not have seen them in time.

hosted by Tony Award Winner James Monroe Iglehart, everyone’s favorite Genie opened the show by saying « Theatre has always and will always survive ». Some words of wisdom that couldn’t be truer in these times.
