What a year for musicals! In a toned down and untelevised presentation, which is a first for the award show, the Golden Globes were announced on Sunday 9th January. The winner of each category were announced live via Twitter and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s website.
And it comes as no surprise that Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog took home most of the awards in the film category: West Side Story winning “BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY” and The Power of the Dog winning “BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA”
While Will Smith received Best Actor in a Drama for his performance in King Richard, Nicole Kidman took home the award for Best Actress in a Drama for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. As for Musical/Comedy, Andrew Garfield swept the award for Best Actor for his impressive performance as Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… BOOM! and the young rising star RAchel Zegler took home the Actress win for portraying Maria in Spielberg’s West Side Story.
A huge win for musicals as Encanto – with music and lyrics by Lin Manuel Mirando – went on to win “BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED” and Ariana DeBose took home the “BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE” award for her role of Anita in West Side Story.
