Following the global success of Hamilton on Disney+, another hit musical could make its grand movie adaptation debut : Once On This Island.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Playwright Jocelyn Bioh is set to write the Wanuri Kahiu-helmed project. It is also said that Marc Platt is on board as a Producer.
Based on Rosa Guy’s novel “My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl”, the musical follows Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy on the other side of their island. On her journey to tear down cultural walls, She is joined by powerful gods.
The show first premiered Off-Broadway before opening on Broadway on 1990. It then returned to Broadway in 2017 with a production directed by Michael Arden and went on to win the 2018 Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical. The cast of the Revial featured Hailey Kilgore, Isaac Cole Powell, Lea Salonga, Merle Dandridge, Quentin Earl, Darrington and Alex Newell.
We still don’t know yet if any of these performers will reprise their role for the movie adaptation.
