Before Hamilton and In The Heights, there was another group of young people with high hopes and dreams. An improv hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme. And now they get to tell their story too.
Following an epic trailer, WE ARE FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME documentary, a 15-year retrospective of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale’s hip-hop improv show that made its Broadway debut at the Booth Theatre last year is set to be released on Hulu on June 5.
Directed by Andrew Fried, the film, tells the journey of Freestyle Love Supreme from a game played by Lin-Manuel Miranda and his collaborators in the basement of the Drama Bookshop to its wide success.
Andrew Fried began shooting the movie in the summer of 2005 when he first encountered the group. Capturing the early days of Freestyle Love Supreme on the sidewalk. Fried revisits old footage to craft this fated story. Both emotional and inspired, We Are Freestyle Love Supreme recalls the creative hopes and dream of youth and why this project still means so much to these accomplished performers.
