All good things must come to an end, and for Sara Bareilles’ Waitress, that end will be on January 5th. Waitress “opened up” on Broadway in April 2016, which will make it the longest running show at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre when it closes. Throughout Waitress’ run, 6 wonderful women have graced the stage as baking extraordinaire, mother-to-be, and overall powerhouse that is Jenna Hunterson. Jessie Mueller, of course, originated the role of Jenna, and her portrayal earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Following her, Sara Bareilles herself took over the leading role, then Betsy Wolfe, Katharine McPhee (who went on to star as Jenna in the West End production), Nicolette Robinson, and Sara Bareilles again. Desi Oakley was the first Jenna on tour, who was followed by Christine Dwyer, who will perform till the tour ends in a few weeks. Shoshana Bean will be playing Jenna through July 21st, and it’s yet to be announced who will succeed her. Lucie Jones is currently starring as Jenna on the West End. The musical was nominated for four Tony Awards, including best musical. The musical is well-loved by many theatre fans, and the closing announcement is crushing. There’s only one thing to do now, and that is get to the Brooks Atkinson while you still can and see this stunning production!
