Emmy Award-winning actress Debra Messing will return to Broadway in Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of “Birthday Candles,” marking the New York premiere of the play.
Written by Noah Haidle and directed by Vivienne Benesch, “Birthday Candles” is about Ernestine Ashworth as she tries to find her place in the universe. Chronicling five generations of experiences and dreams, the play follows Ernestine all the way from her 17th birthday to her 101st birthday.
Perhaps most well-known for her 11 years as Grace Adler on NBC’s “Will & Grace,” Messing made her Broadway debut in the 2014 production of John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar.”
The new play marks the Broadway debut of playwright Noah Haidle and the Broadway directorial debut of director Vivienne Benesch.
“Birthday Cake” is set to begin previews April 2, 2020, and open April 21, 2020, at the American Airlines Theatre. It will run for a limited engagement through June 21, 2020.
Additional casting announcements are forthcoming.
