“On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.”
“It’s October 3rd.”
“On Wednesdays we wear pink.”
October 3rd—better known as “Mean Girls Day” by avid fans of the film—has been a cause for celebration since the release of the Tina Fey-written masterpiece in 2004. But this particular occurrence of the holiday features a calendar alignment that’s happened only twice since the crew of North Shore High first hit cinema screens 14 years ago—it falls on a “pink” Wednesday. Backed by two iconic lines from the film and marking the first October 3rd that the Broadway company of Mean Girls has spent under the bright lights, this Mean Girls Day is poised to be one of the best yet. Here are a few of the festivities you can expect to see on this totally fetch holiday. Get in losers, we’re going to Broadway!
A Free Fan Performance
It seems like the Plastics have made an exception (and they never really do that)—you can sit with them, for free! You read that right: the show’s October 3rd performance is totally free for audience members in attendance. While most Broadway shows offer an in-person lottery, online drawing, or rush ticket policy to help theatre fans see their performances at a reduced price, Mean Girls has set an entirely new precedent by making their seats free of charge as part of the October 3rd celebration. Fans lucky enough to be chosen as part of the online lottery drawing for the special event can put their hard-earned cash towards the perfect pink outfit for the show instead—or some well-deserved cheese fries.
City-Wide Special Events
Do you want to do something fun? (It’s not Taco Bell, we’re on an all-carb diet.) Check out any of a number of partners around the New York City area for exclusive October 3rd deals and discounts. Spots such as Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beer, Gregory’s Coffee, and Dylan’s Candy Bar are offering special Mean Girls-themed treats and discounts for the holiday—often just requiring that you wear pink to be in on the secret. Feel more like you belong with the Mathletes or the debate team? You can test your knowledge shquills at a number of hot spots offering Mean Girls-themed trivia all day for a chance to win some awesome prizes and bragging rights over your friends. If you’d rather skip the social scene in favor of dinner and a movie, you’re in luck—certain theaters all over the US and beyond are screening the film to celebrate this landmark occasion. And when you’re looking for a place to crash after all the festivities, hotels like the Time New York are even offering exclusive booking packages for fans —like the aptly named “It’s October 3rd” deal.
Making Fetch (St.) Happen
After 14 years, Gretchen Weiners finally got her wish – fetch is happening, in a big way. Tina Fey is set to join the Broadway company of Mean Girls to rename the block of 52nd Street between Broadway and 8th Ave. “W. Fetch Street”. The ceremony will take place on October 3rd (naturally) outside of the August Wilson Theatre before the cast takes the stage for that evening’s free fan day performance.
